Tell us Your Story: My wife’s Granny and Poppy were some of her favorite people on the planet, ever. Granny and Poppy (who was a CCC – Civilian Conservation Corps – participant as a teenager and a retired WWII and career Navy veteran) owned an Airstream in the late 60s and into the 70s. Their Airstream’s big red number was 30128. Poppy loved adventure. He’d seen enough of the world in the Navy – he was ready to explore America. Granny was more than willing. The Airstream was the vessel for their grand adventures, big and small. When Granny and Poppy traveled from their home in Florida to visit their daughters (my wife’s mom and aunt) in Louisiana, they towed their Airstream. My wife’s favorite memories as a young child were of staying with Granny and Poppy in that Airstream during those visits. My wife was given the royal treatment and their undivided attention, as any grandchild should. They shared with her stories and pictures of their Airstream travels both near and as far away as Alaska. Those memories of time with Granny and Poppy and of their Airstream adventures made a huge impression. Granny and Poppy were kind, selfless and generous. Nevertheless, Poppy was not one for quietly tolerating false pretense or pride. If someone boasted about a routine accomplishment he often responded with a favorite saying, “well, pin a rose on you” or “well, pin a rose on him/her”. A great lesson from the greatest generation. And an inspiration for our adventures and Airstream’s name. The Pinarose was born. In the spirit of Granny and Poppy, we embark on the first of many Airstream adventures. This summer is the stage for a 10 national park sweep through the northwest. This fall, a Route 66 road trip down the Mother Road. Next, who knows… But we know The Pinarose will be our basecamp and inspiration for years to come.
