Airstream filed a voluntary recall with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) in March 2017 affecting all Airstream Basecamp models manufactured in 2016 through March 9, 2017.
The safety and quality of Airstream products is our highest priority. This voluntary recall addresses instances where the clearance between the tire and wheel-well area is not sufficient to account for shock loads to the axle potentially causing the tire to make contact with the inner wheel well liner.
There are no known cases of tire failure related to this issue. Airstream is actively working with NHTSA to communicate with owners and has issued a field fix to Airstream dealers for this recall that involves a new axle, new tires and a new spare wheel/tire.
While affected Basecamp owners can continue to use their Basecamps as long as they inspect their tires for abnormal wear before and after each trip, owners should contact their preferred dealer to schedule a service appointment to address this issue. If abnormal tire wear is discovered, Airstream advises owners to stop towing their Basecamp and contact Airstream Customer Service and Technical Support for guidance.
Airstream and its 700-plus employees apologize for this inconvenience. We are working hard to resolve this issue with the least possible impact to our customers. For more information, contact Airstream Customer Service and Technical Support at 1 (877) 596-6111, option 2.
Frequently Asked Questions
Once an affected Basecamp owner selects their preferred dealer to address this recall and schedules an appointment for the repair, the dealer will then order the necessary parts from Airstream. Please allow two to three weeks for the parts to arrive at the dealership. Affected owners are encouraged to notify their preferred dealer right away so that the necessary parts are ordered and the dealer can schedule a time for your repair. Keep in mind the dealer will need to find a suitable time for the repair which may cause another slight delay. Our dealers understand the importance of the recall and are doing everything they can to schedule the repairs as soon as they can.
No, this only affects Basecamps manufactured from September 8, 2016 to March 9, 2017.
The general range of trailers involved includes serial numbers between 203001-204082. However, because Airstream serial numbers do not run in contiguous series, there may be trailers within the range listed that are not affected by this recall. The Airstream serial number is the last 6 digits of the VIN number. For additional verification, please contact Airstream Customer Service at 1 (877) 596-6111, option 2.
This is a proven and trusted axle that is used throughout various industries. This recall is specific to how this axle was engineered to interact with the Basecamp. Airstream has no reports of this axle being an issue in other products.
This issue was identified during ongoing product testing and feedback from owners.
The recall repair includes replacement of the existing 22.5 degree axle with a new 10 degree axle, replacing the existing Goodyear Assurance 255/55R18 tires with Goodyear Assurance 235/55/R18 tires and replacing existing spare tire and wheel with a new spare tire and wheel (ST205/75D15LRC).
The new 10 degree axle comes with the added benefit of 1.875 inches of additional ground clearance. This additional ground clearance improves the departure angle and adds more versatility to Basecamp; it also increases overall vehicle height to 8’ 8.125” (including the optional air conditioning). The new tires have a slightly lower profile but are the same tire brand and tread: Goodyear Assurance. The original size 255/55R18 will be replaced with the new 235/55R18 size. The current 3500lb GVWR will be unaffected by the change.
Airstream Basecamp underwent extensive testing before its release. However, it is impossible to simulate every environment Basecamp may experience. Through continuous product evaluation and feedback from our customers, we can quickly identify and address such issues to insure the safety of our products.
Airstream is covering the cost of parts and labor on recall repairs through the owner’s preferred Airstream dealer.
The total number of trailers potentionally affected is 293.
First, check to see if the recall has already been completed on your Basecamp. The easiest way to check is to look at the tire size. If your tires are 235/55R18, then it appears the recall has been completed. Basecamp owners may contact Airstream Customer Service and Technical Service to verify. NHTSA guidelines prevent dealers from delivering new vehicles to consumers that are affected by active, voluntary safety recalls; dealers were notified of the recall on March 17, 2017.
Due to variation of use and loading, not all recalled trailers may be experiencing the potential wheel and wheel-well clearance issue. Basecamp owners can continue to use their Basecamps as long as they inspect their tires for abnormal wear before and after each trip. If such wear is discovered, Airstream advises owners to stop towing their Basecamp until they can have the recall addressed.
In accordance with NHTSA, dealers may not deliver new vehicles with unresolved recalls.
Yes, Basecamps are available for purchase through our independent network of authorized Airstream dealers. Dealers are required to complete this recall on new Basecamps before they can be delivered. As of April 2017, the Airstream factory has fully transitioned to the updated axle, wheel and tire to address this issue.
We are working with our independent dealers to make this process as seamless as possible. Repairs could take up to 3 hours to complete. However, scheduling and other factors could extend this time frame. Affected Basecamp owners should coordinate with their preferred dealer to schedule a time that least impacts them.
Affected owners will be notified by Airstream via mail in close cooperation with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration guidelines. Owners can also call Airstream Customer Service and Technical Support at 1 (877) 596-6111, Option 2 for additional information.
