First developed as a concept in 2002, Basecamp has evolved over the decades into Airstream's most adventurous off-grid travel trailer.
Some designs begin with a sketch. Others begin with a question.

The answer has evolved over more than two decades, but the guiding idea has remained remarkably consistent. From its earliest concepts to today's adventure-ready travel trailer, Basecamp has always been about helping travelers get closer to the outdoors while carrying forward the spirit of innovation that has defined Airstream since the beginning.

Basecamp: A Millennial Design that Looked to the Future
In the early 2000s, Airstream began exploring ways to introduce a new kind of travel trailer to the lineup. A growing segment of travelers wanted something different from a traditional RV experience. Cyclists, climbers, paddlers, hikers, and explorers wanted a lightweight trailer that supported their adventures rather than becoming the destination itself. They also wanted the quality handmade craftsmanship promised by a brand entering its eighth decade as a leader in outdoor recreational vehicles.
To develop that vision, Airstream collaborated with Nissan Design America to imagine a new travel trailer that could bring Airstream quality and design to a more active, outdoor-focused audience. The goal was to develop a design that felt new, rugged, and adventure-ready, while maintaining the Airstream hallmarks with riveted aluminum construction and streamlined design. The work from that collaboration would ultimately help shape what became Basecamp.
Rather than designing a smaller version of an existing travel trailer, Airstream set out to create something entirely new.
Inspired by Airstream's Earliest Roots
Though Basecamp represented a bold new direction, its inspiration could be traced back to the earliest days of the company.
Wally Byam's original trailers were lightweight, efficient, and designed to make travel easier and more accessible. That same philosophy informed the development of Basecamp. The original concept drew styling inspiration from one of Wally Byam's first travel trailer designs – the Torpedo Car Cruiser, first built in the late 1920s. This fresh, rugged design connected one of Airstream's newest ideas to one of its oldest.
The goal was not to recreate the past, but to reinterpret it for a new generation of travelers.

Launching the New Basecamp to an Outdoor-Focused Audience
When Basecamp debuted in 2007, it looked unlike anything else in the Airstream lineup. It blended elements of tent camping, gear hauling, and RV travel into a single flexible platform, all wrapped in sleek riveted aluminum.
Everything about the design was focused on versatility. The interior could quickly transition between living space, sleeping quarters, and gear storage. Large windows connected travelers to their surroundings. The rear doors made loading bikes, kayaks, and outdoor equipment easier. The overall footprint remained compact and easy to tow.
Most importantly, the trailer was conceived as a base for adventure. Instead of bringing the comforts of home into the wilderness, Basecamp encouraged travelers to spend more time outside and use the trailer as a launch point for exploration.
Many of the ideas that defined the original Basecamp anticipated the ways travelers would increasingly seek flexible, outdoor-focused experiences in the years that followed. It set the stage for what would become one of Airstream's most popular travel trailers.

A New Generation of Basecamp
As more travelers embraced lightweight camping, outdoor recreation, and flexible forms of travel, interest in compact adventure trailers continued to grow.
That demand helped inspire the return of Basecamp. Reintroduced in 2017, the new generation retained the adventurous spirit of the original while incorporating lessons learned through years of product development and changing travel habits.
The modern Basecamp was designed from the ground up to balance capability with comfort. The compact, 16-foot floor plan made towing approachable, while innovative interior layouts maximized every inch of available space. The rear of the trailer was redesign with a single door that opened to easily allow gear loading.
It was unmistakably Basecamp, but it was also unmistakably Airstream.

Designing for the Outdoors
One of the defining principles behind today's Basecamp is the idea that nature should never feel far away.
That philosophy is visible in many of the trailer's signature design features, especially the panoramic front windows that create a strong visual connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.
Every element serves a purpose:
Flexible seating and sleeping spaces adapt to changing needs.
Rear cargo access makes it easy to transport adventure gear.
Compact dimensions encourage spontaneous travel.
Standard features like a 3-inch suspension lift, rugged tires, and front rock guard protection support journeys beyond the pavement.
Rather than separating travelers from the outdoors, the design brings them closer to it.

New Floor Plans, Inspired Partnerships, and Innovative Technology
Basecamp 20 Expands the Possibilities
In 2021, Airstream added a larger, 20-foot floor plan to the Basecamp lineup. Where Basecamp 16 had a convertible living and sleeping space in the rear and a galley up front, Basecamp 20 offered two versatile living spaces that added convenience and room to spread out. The galley was relocated from the front to the midship along the curbside wall, opening the front for a convertible U-shaped dinette. During the day, travelers could eat around the table that pivoted to make entry to the seating easier. At night, the dinette could be converted into a secondary sleeping space.
The optional X-Package (now a standard feature in Basecamp Travel Trailers) was introduced in 2018, adding rugged tires, a 3-inch suspension lift for added ground clearance, and front rock guards to protect against road debris.
