For nature photographer Ben Hicks and his family of four, Rangeline 21PL was the perfect travel van for hitting the road and exploring the Florida Keys. Traveling south on one of the nation’s most beautiful road trip routes, the Hicks family enjoyed the journey as much as the destination. The ease of traveling with a camper van meant they could set up camp in the gorgeous, private campsites at Sugarloaf Key KOA and then venture out to explore Key West and the lower Keys in both comfort and style.

A Smart Bed System so You Can Bring Along the Family

Built on the powerful, dependable RAM ProMaster 3500 FWD chassis, Rangeline 21PL is a 21-foot touring coach with everything you need to make your travel adventures easier and more comfortable while maximizing your time on the road. The heart of the new Rangeline 21PL is its innovative sleeping space, where a powered loft bed creates a versatile solo or bunk bed system above the convertible bench seating below. During the day, the power loft bed tucks into the ceiling to open up the living space for dining, board games, or catching up on emails.  

Rangeline 21PL’s powered loft bed system meant the Hicks family could quickly set up a sleeping space for their family of four. The rear Smartbench quickly converts to a comfortable 74 in x 52.25 in sleep area. At the push of a button, the powered loft bed with a plush mattress lowers down on a track and can be positioned at a wide variety of heights above the bed below, giving all travelers plenty of room to spread out comfortably.Families have space to sleep four while solo adventurers and traveling couples can lower the bed down completely for a luxurious (and convenient) sleeping area. Lowering the powered loft bed also reveals a skylight with built-in shade that helps bring even more natural light into the interior.   

During the day, the Hicks family raised the powered loft bed flush against the ceiling, making room for a wide living space. And when it came time for an excursion beyond the campsites, the rear seating with two belted positions – and plenty of windows – meant the kids had a great view of the expansive ocean views.

Powerful Electrical Capability that Takes You Far

Rangeline 21PL features a powerful, innovative electrical systems that makes it easy to travel anywhere in comfort. Whether you’re running the air conditioner, quickly heating up meals in the microwave, or cooking on the portable induction cooktop, Rangeline 21PL’s electrical system is built to be on the move and capable of heading off-grid for adventures afield. Anchored by 3.5 kWh of deep cycle lithium batteries and a 3,000 Watt inverter, Rangeline 21PL also features a 2.8 kWh ultra-quiet auto start gasoline-fueled generator and 200 Watts of standard roof mounted solar panels. This single-fuel-source system can draw gasoline from the vehicle’stank to fuel the generator and recharge the batteries wherever you travel. The lithium battery system works in conjunction with the 3,000 Watt inverter to allow for air-conditioned comfort and microwave use even when far from campground shore power. 

Whether you’re setting up camp at a traditional campground or roaming off-pavement to explore boondocking options, Rangeline 21PL lets you go where you want to with ease. 

All the Comforts of Home: Kitchen, Bathroom, Sleeping and Living Space

Rangeline 21PL’s Galley

For more than 95 years, Airstream has been on a continuous journey toward perfecting the art of travel with optimal space utilization and all the comforts of home. That mentality delivers exponentially in the new Rangeline 21PL. Step inside the van and find every inch of space is convertible, maximized, and serves multiple uses. 

The galley features a wide countertop with a stainless-steel sink featuring a compatible bamboo cutting board cover to extend counter space and a 12 V 4.3 cu ft combo refrigerator and freezer (with marker board front) on the opposite side. Under the counter, cabinets open to reveal spacious pull-out drawers with locking mechanisms that help keep everything secure while moving down the highway. There’s even an inset trash can in the bottom drawer, complete with a perfectly CNC routed nest for trash bags. From pots and pans to pantry items and meal ingredients, there’s space for everything you need for delicious meals on the road. An overhead locker provides even more space for kitchen essentials.  

The galley also features a portable electric induction cooktop that can be used on the galley counter or taken out to the campsite picnic table for outdoor cooking. When not in use, it stows away out of site, leaving more room for meal prep.

Rangeline 21PL’s Onboard Wet Bath

The new Rangeline 21PL comes standard with a space-saving wet bath. The all-in-one design delivers a shower, toilet, and sink that’s convenient and easy to clean. The hinged sink pulls down from the wall and stows away while showering and features its own dedicated faucet. The toilet features a waterproof toilet paper holder. Netted storage compartments above the sink make it easy to storage shower and hygiene products. And an overhead skylight opens up to 6’ 4” of headroom so you can stand comfortably.  

For a family trip, the onboard wet bath offers a convenient option that turns any quick stop into a rest stop. Gas station stops turn into opportunities to grab a snack, use the bathroom, and stretch your legs – all without leaving the vehicle.

Rangeline 21PL’s Sleeping and Living Space

For a family of four like Ben’s, the four-person sleep space offered the ideal setup for road trip adventures. For couples, Rangeline 21PL’s powered lofted bed system makes it easy to quickly convert from sleeping to living space at the push of a button. Netted safety restraints around the sides of the powered loft bed ensure everyone stays put during the night, and a collapsable ladder provides easy access to the powered loft at any height position.  

During the day, Rangeline 21PL’s rear living space offers a spacious L-shaped lounge for dining, catching up on work emails, or family games. For Ben and his family, it was a place where Ben could edit photos while the kids were at the pool or the whole family could join in a fun game night activity. An innovative marine-grade table system quickly latches onto an inset rail that allows it to slide to any position along the streetside cabinet. The two-piece swiveling table delivers an expansive surface while maintaining easy access to the seating area. While driving, the table quickly stows away.  

 Aluminum  L-track set in the floor allows the belted Smartbench to slide quickly forward and backward, opening up the rear of the van for luggage and gear storage while en route. Once the Hicks family arrived at their destination on Sugarloaf Key, they slid the bench back to the rear of the van and opened up the interior space. The bench can also be completely removed to make plenty of room for bikes, kayaks, or even a compact dirt bike. MOLLE panels on the rear doors and L-track railing in the floor and walls provides convenient and adjustable options for securing gear with removable D-rings (sold separately and available at Airstream Supply Company)

The Rangeline 21PL Driving Experience

Built on the RAM ProMaster chassis, Rangeline 21PL delivers powerful performance and dependability on one of the most proven van chassis on the market. The wide windshield and seating height provides an expansive vantage point while navigating. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity in the dashboard’s UConnect 5 Nav with 10.1 in Touchscreen Display meant Ben could quickly connect his phone for maps, streaming audio, and messaging. Active Lane Assist and Active Cruise Control functionality make it easy to relax and enjoy the ride, while numerous safety sensors provide exceptional situational awareness. A video rear view mirror gives a crystal clear view behind the van, and backup cameras make it easy to navigate no matter where you’re going.

For the Hicks family, the Rangeline 21PL offered the best of both worlds – a comfortable vacation rental on wheels with the option to explore beyond the confines of the campground. A 35-minute drive up to the TurtleHospital in Marathon Key allowed the family to experience the magical world of Florida’s sea turtle population and – for Ben’s children – an opportunity to connect with their father’s passion for protecting one of nature’s most fascinating creatures. 

Likewise, the family could easily navigate the busy Key West streets, park, and explore one of America’s most incredible travel destinations. From exploring the Key West harbor, grabbing Cuban coffee and smoothies, taking in the sights at Mallory Square, and grabbing an ice cream treat at the end of the day, Rangeline 21PL’s 21-foot length made the experience feel more akin to driving a car than a recreational vehicle.
