The Best Travel Trailers for Towing with an SUV

Jeep Wrangler towing Airstream Caravel Travel Trailer in the mountains

The process of buying a new RV is made much simpler when you can tow it with the vehicle you already have. Many SUVs are capable of towing a wide range of smaller trailers, doubling as a daily driver and opening the door to more flexible adventures.

Owning an Airstream travel trailer lets you explore the world on your own terms, and towing is a central part of that freedom. If you’re considering a smaller trailer, the vehicle already in your driveway may be more capable than you think. Choosing the right combination of trailer and tow vehicle ensures every trip is smooth, safe, and enjoyable.

Larger trailers naturally require more tow‑vehicle capability. But if you’re considering a single‑axle Airstream, your everyday SUV or crossover may be the perfect match. Many of Airstream's smaller trailers shine not just for their lighter weight, but also for their easy maneuverability—often narrower and shorter than typical travel trailers—making them simpler to tow, navigate, and see around on the road.

Single-Axle Airstream Travel Trailers Perfect for SUVs

Most mid-sized SUVs these days can safely haul 3,500-6,000 lbs. Larger SUVs can usually haul 5,000-9.000 lbs. And some heavy-duty SUVs can haul more than 10,000 lbs. Always keep in mind that many SUVs require a specific towing package with an upgraded hitch, proper wiring, and a brake controller in order to reach their maximum rating. Consult your vehicle manual or dealer to understand exactly your tow vehicle's tow capacity. Deciding Which Trailer and Vehicle are Right For You

Many of Airstream’s single-axle lineup are perfectly towable by SUVs, hybrids and EVs. In order to decide if your smaller vehicle is right for towing an Airstream, it’s important to understand several terms.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR):
The maximum safe weight of a fully loaded tow vehicle or trailer. Includes the vehicle, passengers, and cargo.

Tow Rating:
The most weight your vehicle can safely tow. Your trailer’s GVWR must be below this number.

Cargo Capacity (NCC):
How much weight your Airstream can carry inside—cargo and passengers only. Overloading reduces control and strains towing components.

Unit Base Weight (UBW):
The trailer’s “dry weight” from the factory, before any cargo, water, or gear is added.

Hitch Weight (HW):
The amount of trailer weight pressing down on the tow vehicle’s hitch. Too much HW harms handling and braking. Weight distribution inside the trailer—and a distribution hitch—can affect it.

Occupant and Cargo Carrying Capacity (OCCC):
For motorized RVs, this is the total allowable weight of people, pets, cargo, and supplies on board.

Questions To Ask

When deciding which travel trailer is right for your lifestyle and needs, here are a few questions to consider.

  • How many people will usually be traveling and sleeping in the trailer? When it comes down to weight, sometimes the difference between 2 adults and a family of four can put you over capacity.
  • How much gear will you frequently bring? Board games and blankets are one thing, mountain bikes, canoes, and heavy equipment can add up.
  • Will it be easy to outfit your SUV with the correct hitch, wiring, and brake controller to tow?

Whether you’re buying your first travel trailer or downsizing from a dual‑axle to a single‑axle, many Airstream models pair perfectly with SUVs and smaller tow vehicles. World Traveler, Bambi, Caravel, Basecamp, and Basecamp Xe are often easy and efficient to tow with the vehicle you already own.
