When Gregg DuCharme and Julianne Will set out on their 74-day trip through the South and New England, it was hard to envision some of the campgrounds they booked.
Even the most extensive review-reading and Google searching couldn’t fully prepare them for places like the RV park south of Kennebunkport, Maine, where there was hardly a few feet from one site to the next.
“When we opened the curtains the first morning in that campground, we were looking directly at the neighbors having breakfast. It was as if we were sitting at their table,” says Julianne. “We were so glad that we could leave the curtains closed for privacy but still let in lots of natural light through the windows above.”
From the flat, treeless sites on the banks of the Mississippi River where you could see every RV for a mile to the dense RV parking lot in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, privacy was often in short supply. But Gregg and Julianne were able to create a quiet, sunny retreat, thanks to the Vista View windows just below the roofline in their 33-foot Classic FB.
In fact they found that their Airstream offered many of the comforts of home during their two-and-a-half months on the road. And they also found plenty of campsites with room to spread out.
The Classic 33FB Bathroom is a Bit of Bliss
There are bathrooms that get the job done, and then there’s the bathroom in the 33-foot Classic. If you haven’t seen it, you should visit your local Airstream dealer and take a peek.
“To be honest, that bathroom was the deciding factor when we chose the 33-foot Classic,” Julianne says.
She and Gregg weren’t just camping. They were visiting friends and family and spending time in big cities along the way, including New York. Julianne wanted to be able to do her hair and makeup and pull together an outfit (from the cedar-lined closet, no less).
And at 6-foot-3, Gregg wanted to be able to shower without having to hunch over. The extra-roomy facilities in the 33-foot Classic were a boon for them both.
The Large Refrigerator Saved Their Bacon
Well, maybe not actual bacon. But it had room for all of their breakfast berries, yogurts, almond milk, and salad fixings.
“We loved trying local dishes,” Julianne says. “But when you’re on the road that long, you need balance and a break from sugar and salt. There was ample space in the kitchen to store all our favorite healthy foods, as well as the colander, cutting board, knives and other essentials.”
They Had Comfort at Their Fingertips
“With the press of a button, we could set the lighting. We could quickly adjust to a comfortable temperature no matter the weather. The head of the bed would even adjust,” Gregg says. They also could hit a button to extend the awning, set the stabilizers, raise or lower the power dining table, turn off all unnecessary electronic components when they were leaving for the day or getting ready to hit the road, and turn them back on again. And with Model Year 2026 Airstream Classics, MyAirstream technology lets owners control all those features from a tablet or smartphone.
They Could Put Their Feet Up
On days when they weren’t driving, Gregg and Julianne were walking. They covered miles in Memphis, Williamsburg, Philadelphia, Boston, Portsmouth, Freeport, and many other stops.
So at the end of each day, they were grateful to come home to their Classic, take a shower and relax on the sofa with dual recliners, enjoying the air-conditioning and a movie on the big screen.
“We quickly fell into a routine even though we were constantly exploring somewhere new,” Julianne says. “After a long day of seeing every possible sight in our destinations, we’d come back to our clean, bright, comfortable home away from home and rest our tired feet. Our Airstream really became our oasis.”
“We really felt spoiled,” Gregg says.
Other features they fell in love with as they traveled interstates and country roads:
- Solar panels that could top off the batteries in a pinch
- An exterior shower where their beloved dog Jackson could get a hot bath after big adventures
- The BlueTooth® stereo for their epic road trip playlists
- Automatic foot lighting for late-night bathroom breaks
- A rear camera that allowed Gregg to back into tight spaces like a pro
- And nonessential but extra fun—the doorbell!
They first heard the doorbell ring when fellow Airstreamers dropped by with a flamingo-pinktastic goodie bag in a campground near Colonial Williamsburg. One of the perks of choosing an Airstream, they found, was joining a friendly community, not just on the ground but also online when they needed a little helpful how-to.
The couple loved their big rig, and it sparked curiosity and conversations wherever they went.
“We were usually the shiniest thing on the block,” Gregg says. “We were proud to answer the many questions we received about our traveling home as well as encourage those who got the bug to think, this looks fun, we could do it too.”
