Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk: A Family’s Home Away From Home

From stargazing in the desert to chasing hot air balloons in New Mexico, Jennifer Weiss and her family have found magic in the unexpected. And it all began the day they stepped into their Airstream.

Jennifer Weiss never thought she'd fall in love with camping.

"Too much effort,” she says. “Tents, sleeping bags, packing gear for the kids. It just felt exhausting.”

But that changed in 2022, when her sister pulled up in a cozy RV. It wasn’t roughing it. It was glamping, and it sparked something.

Jennifer and her husband started researching. Eventually they found their perfect match, an Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk. Just a few trial trips in, and they were all in.

“Once we got the hang of how to use the trailer, we were hooked.”

The Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk is perfect for families. It provides two separate sleeping areas – a primary sleeping area at the front (with a queen bed or twin bed option), plus a full-sized set of bunk beds at the rear of the trailer, adjacent to the all-in-one bathroom. Parents can sleep up front, and kids – from toddlers to teenagers – can sleep comfortably in the back. (Plus, there's extra sleeping space if you put the dinette down in the central living area, as well as on the lounge.)

But while the dinette is up, parents have a space to work that doesn't encroach on the other living areas. Everyone has space to spread out, and for the Weisses, it's the perfect Airstream floor plan for exploring together.

Home, Just on Wheels

The Weiss family now travels extensively while homeschooling their 10- and 12-year-olds along the way. Their Airstream? It's more than a camper — it's a classroom, a kitchen, and a place to wind down together at the end of a long day.

“Our Airstream is our home away from home. It’s easy to pack their items once and tow them around the country.”

There’s a rhythm inside the Airstream. Jennifer plans meals in advance and keeps everything organized. The kids decorate their bunks with drawings and hang a net filled with their favorite stuffed animals that turn their space into a tiny gallery of comfort and memories.

They’ve learned to travel light, but never feel like they're missing anything.

The World Is Their Classroom

The Weisses have crossed the Great Plains, watched golden aspens shimmer in the Rockies, and stared up at the Milky Way during a stargazing class at the Grand Canyon. Every trip is an opportunity to use the Airstream in the way Wally Byam intended – to get out into the world, meet people, explore, and discover new opportunities to grow and learn.

At the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, the family didn't just watch the balloons launch into the early morning air. They got to talking with some of the balloon crews, and were eventually invited to help launch hot air balloons with crews from Texas and Belgium.

Like many families, the Weisses believe in seeing the world with their own eyes, rather than just reading about it and dreaming of going there. They use their Airstream as a mobile support system for their adventures together – family travel is easier when you're taking along all your snacks, meals, a shower, and a bathroom.

“We save money by cooking our own meals and not having to rent pricey hotels,” Jennifer says. “But the best part is the freedom to explore as a family.”

Finding Their Flow

Some days they boondock under wide-open skies. Other days, they settle into full-hookup campgrounds where the kids play in rivers or bike to a café. They’ve camped on beaches in Maryland, stayed in a marina with NYC skyline views, and parked beside orchards in Vermont.

When they need to change plans, they do. “We can adjust routes, switch campgrounds, and follow where the day leads,” Jennifer says. Along the way, their kids learn about local history, visit museums, and explore cities and National Parks. Their Flying Cloud provides the comfortable place to come back to after a day of adventure.

Tips From the Road

Jennifer keeps things real and simple. Here are a few tips she’s picked up on the road.

  • Prep meals ahead and reuse ingredients.
  • Download movies, shows, and audiobooks before long drive days.
  • Let kids make their space their own.
  • Use apps such as Atlas Obscura, which helps you discover quirky roadside stops.
  • And most importantly, connect with other Airstreamers.

Life, Slowed Down

Jennifer will be the first to admit that RV life isn’t always easy. But it’s worth it.

“You’re together. You talk more. You solve things instead of brushing them off,” she says. “You see things most people only read about.”

And it all fits in one silver trailer rolling down the road.
