Ennis, Texas is only an hour’s drive from the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but it’s about as far from the big-city bustle as you can get. White picket fences, bluebonnet flowers, brick buildings on Main Street, and old wooden barns just outside of town. If there’s anything that needs fixing, the folks at the hardware will pause their whole day to help you find the right part.
Just 10-miles north of downtown Ennis is the Range Vintage Trailer Resort, with 30 acres of secluded camping paradise that feels a world away from the bustle of nearby Dallas. There's rolling hills, a canopy of oaks, and the occasional herd of goats wandering through. But also, gourmet food and a pretty spectacular pool.
Janie Gracia, 49, has lived in Texas for most of her life—since she was 12-years-old. And she still loves to explore her state. She lives in Colleyville and works in Irving. And with 23-years of law enforcement under her belt, weekends are her time to unwind and be calm. More often than not, she finds herself at the Range.
Janie’s trips aren’t extravagant or far away, but that’s the point. She travels roads she knows, and arrives at a place that’s comfortable. “Because I only have so much time, I tend to travel on long weekends when I can, or even just regular weekends.”
It’s become a bit of a ritual for Janie, who grew up tent camping, and then upgraded as an adult. “In 2015 I finally picked up RV camping. I went through several RVs and then landed on an Airstream in 2023.” Janie’s 23-foot Airstream International Travel Trailer is named Rosie, because Janie loves Rosé. For her, Rosie represents independence—the ability to go her own way, at her own pace.
Janie’s husband, Mac, joins her for special occasions—anniversaries or longer trips—but most of the time Janie goes solo, or with her goldendoodle dogs, Lilly and Penelope. It’s her time. “I can set the Airstream up myself, tear down camp myself, and when I’m there I don’t have to worry about what anyone else wants to do or eat, I just get to take care of myself.”
The 23-foot International is perfect for Janie because it’s just the right amount of space: a kitchen and dinette, a closet, and a bedroom. Big enough that she has everything she needs and wants, but not so big that it’s overwhelming. And this season she’s making some updates. “I’m adding a bidet, adding a high-pressure showerhead, drawers in the closet, and adjustable shelves in the bedroom. I’m also having the AC upgraded, because Texas is hot!”

Just like remodeling and upgrading a home, the International can truly become your own unique space, with all the things you need and love. With the new upgrades, Janie is looking forward to this season of adventure being even more comfortable and exciting than last.
The Range owners, Sarah and Paul, were long-time Airstreamers when they decided to open their own special spot in Texas. Twenty-two spaces for Airstream and vintage trailers, with lots of room to relax and find calm. The Range features a kitchen and dining area, and visitors can place their order for dinner before they even arrive. Not much beats quiet beauty and a gourmet meal.
Janie’s weekends involve a lot of relaxing—a lot of taking in the panoramic views from the International. She also loves catching up on her favorite TV shows, taking long walks with her pups, drinking coffee, and chatting with other travelers. “It’s not the same group every weekend, but I’ve made a lot of friends.”
There’s also an on-site bar at the Range, in a vintage 1959 Airstream Globetrotter, of course. “At five o’clock I stroll over, hang out, have a couple drinks, and catch up. Dinner is at 7. Friday is backyard burgers, Saturday is pizza.” It’s like big-kid camp, but with a few more perks than a kid's sleep-away camp. “Sarah arranges where everyone will sit, and she puts people together who she’s sure will get along. She knows us.”
Besides solo trips to the Range, Janie and Mac’s longer trip this year will be to one of the state parks in East Texas. “We love the dogwoods when they’re blooming, and the pine trees in that area.” They also love being next to a body of water, especially Lake Tyler. “It’s so peaceful out there. You can see all the reflections on the water. It’s just wonderful.”
On longer trips, when Janie has more company and fewer gourmet meals made for her, she and Mac love to make big breakfasts in the International. “Eggs, bacon, hash browns, tortillas.” Rosie fills with all the good smells. They pass the time with “Chickenfoot” dominoes games, and by watching the fish jump on the lake.
Since she first got Rosie, Janie has documented each trip she takes in a journal that lives on a shelf in the bedroom. “I love to write a rundown of the day, the things we cooked, silly things we do, who won the games we play, and solo stuff when I’m alone.” It’s nice to look back and remember stunning sunsets, hearty meals, and inside jokes.
Janie has ambitions of some longer, farther-away trips when she retires, but for now it’s the familiar trek down the road that fills her soul. She’s on her own, but not too far away. She’s independent, but surrounded by friends. She’s keeping it simple, but caring for herself in the absolute best ways she can think of.
