Endless Caravan: 4 Stops Down, 21 To Go

Our Endless Caravan crew is on the road! Chef Hugh and his team have already hosted events in Brooklyn, Providence, Portland and Boston. Now they’re headed south! Come follow along on their adventure and catch a glimpse of the tour from Hugh’s perspective.

A cookbook tour in an Airstream in the winter was not my most thought through idea but it has been an escapade of very interesting proportions so far. We started in Ohio, at the epicenter of all things Airstream, the factory in Jackson Center. We hooked up our International Signature 27FB to a Ford 150, under the tutelage of Kevin, a man who was, rumor has it, born in the factory and has lived there ever since. (Kevin was amazing.) After getting schooled on winterizing and clean outs and basic driving, they let us loose. We drove from Ohio to Hershey PA, with gales of wind and buckets of rain, while the temperature dropped in front of our eyes.

In these situations, it is good to make sure you have propane to power your furnace on the beautiful aluminum riveted tube, but alas, we were empty and it was after hours. Luckily the KOA owner was locking up and was the kindest soul to our cold pleas. Up and running with heat we climbed into our sleeping bags, three dudes in a trailer, glamping in style, but not before we got 8 pounds of pork into the slow cooker and prepped for our first event in Brooklyn at the Whole Foods in Gowanus. Porcine aromatherapy is an interesting sleep theme.

Brooklyn was incredibly cold, but we served a lot of tacos and had a lot of fun. From there we went north to Providence, esteemed culinary city that it is, with Johnson and Wales and a ton of great restaurants. We camped in Mystic, CT and found an amazing restaurant called the Oyster Club. Then we shipped off to Portland where we met up with friends and ate at Eventide in the late afternoon. We also bought warmer clothes and supplies at Portland Dry Goods, my favorite clothing store in the land. Portland, Maine is such an amazing town.

From there we turned South and went to Boston, a town I love except for the presence of their pesky hockey team, the nemesis of my heralded Montreal Canadiens. We set up shop on the Whole Foods in Brighton and had a great crowd despite rain and grey skies.

And now it is morning in Hershey PA at the KOA, laundry is being done, the weather has warmed up and I am cozy in my socks that I bought at Whole Foods. Whole Foods has amazing socks. Who would have thought that?

Off to Dickinson College in Carlisle and then it all points South. Many tacos will be had.
