Endless Caravan: Introducing Jesse and James!

Jesse & James

For Race the Tide's Jesse Macht and James Smith, a concert isn’t just a concert. It’s a communal exercise in what they call “Radical Sharing.” The two musician friends are taking that concept to the road leading our next Endless Caravan. They’ll stop in fourteen cities across the country and host “Sunsets at…” events. Part concert and part performance, each event features Jesse and James playing their music and inviting local folks to share their interests, creativity, and knowledge.

The seed for this Endless Caravan was born out of Jesse’s frustration with life as a touring musician. “I was tired of playing bars to fifteen people,” he says. “I felt like that wasn’t a good process for my own creativity.” At the time, James was incorporating small home concerts into his tour schedule. He suggested Jesse try something similar, and that led to Jesse crisscrossing the US and Europe on a series of almost 80 shows hosted at the homes of his fans.

“The intimacy of the connection just really worked for the music,” Jesse says. Looking to expand on that idea, Jesse organized a series of events across Los Angeles that he called “Sunsets at…” These eclectic evenings featured everything from music and drum circles to talks by local experts. Back in November, he teamed up with Airstream for one night, and the video below gives you a taste for what you can expect for these future fun, interactive events.

As Jesse and James take “Sunsets at…” on the road, they will be highlighting local stories that make each location special.

“That’s why travel is so important to this,” says James."We want to experience what local people have that’s exciting in their area – the things you take for granted."

Their plans include everything from a talk about edible mushroom cultivation to performances by young musicians. Their Washington, D.C. event is catered by chefs from refugee countries working toward opening their own catering companies, and Jesse and James have invited those chefs to share stories of that experience with the audience.

“It’s no holds barred,” says James. “We can have anybody who has an interest or a passion come up.”
