Airstream’s 90-Year History of Overland Travel Expertise

Since 1931, Airstream has been on a constant quest to push the boundaries of outdoor travel and help travelers get farther afield than they ever thought possible. In many ways, Airstream helped kick off the modern overlanding movement when it introduced what’s believed to be the world’s first self-contained travel trailer in 1958. No longer tethered to the traditional hookups offered at campgrounds, Airstream travel trailers offered adventurous travelers the opportunity to follow their dreams while bringing along all the comforts of home.

Over the following decades, engineering and design kept pace with Airstream founder Wally Byam’s desire to never simply make changes for the sake of change, but to always improve our products. He took his trailers around the world on globetrotting caravans, crisscrossing continents via highways, dirt roads, and sometimes no road at all.

Decades later, we’re still living up to Wally’s philosophy of improvement, with new RVs that push the boundaries further than ever with off-grid capability, powerful batteries, and engineering features that help Airstreamers tackle challenging terrain.
