Best Road Trip Games

With nothing but the open road ahead, there is endless opportunity while driving to play or create games of your own. We’ve consulted full-time Airstreamer, Ramona Creel, on the best road trip games that she plays while heading down the open road. Read on to learn more and get the games rolling:

When you’re traveling, do you ever play games on the road?

As we wander the highways and byways, my fiancé and I keep an eye out for Volkswagens – the way we did as kids, only a little more elevated. The main rule - only vintage vehicles count. We’re endlessly creating our own regulations that increase the rule-maker’s points (ie-“if it’s a red convertible, it’s worth twice as much as your yellow microbus with the hippie desert sunset painted on the side”). It goes without saying that harder-to-find models are worth more. Oh, and spotting an Airstream before the other one does, means a guaranteed win – we’re still six-year-olds at heart!

What are you best road trip games for adults?

I know some folks count cows – I count stuff that’s indigenous to the area. For instance, tumbleweeds in the southwest or lighthouses along the coast. When I’m really bored, I’ll make up songs or poems about the landscape. I’m also not above the occasional Chinese fire drill, a little Mad Libs (which devolves pretty quickly when we don’t have kids in the car) and the rolling Trivial Pursuit.

Do you do other things to pass the time by?

You know how you get that 30-second glimpse into a person’s world as you pass their car on the road? Or make all kinds of presumptions about the family you sit next to in a restaurant? Ben (my fiancé) and I excel at creating entire lifelong backstories for complete strangers.

Do you have good road trip games to play with kids?

We don’t have kids of our own but when we are with our nieces or nephews, Uncle Ben will color or do puzzle books with them. Aunt Ramona loves to draw pictures of the passing landscape on the windows - this is a great pastime for little ones and they can easily wipe and redraw for the entire trip. We also love to put “I spy” skills to use, along with scavenger hunts. There is also the great game of “Don’t Say It” with common words like “look” or “car” or “when”, and every time one of the kids says it, they get tickled! Be sure this game is happening in the backseat though, to prevent the driver from getting kicked.

Fun on the road, isn’t just for the destination, it’s for creating memories during the journey. We love that traveling with family creates quality time and memories to last a lifetime! Please share with us the games that you love to enjoy as a family via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, we would love to hear more.
