This week has been one of my favorites so far out on the road. We’ve gathered up two extra guests and headed from LA and up the 101 to my favorite place in the world, the Central Coast. This place isn’t only my favorite because of it’s luscious rolling hills overlooking the crashing waves of the ocean, but it’s also very nostalgic for me, because it’s where I grew up.

Showing my hometown to friends who I’ve met after moving away is one of my greatest joys. It’s a part of me that they’ve never seen. A small town beach girl who runs around barefoot with sand in her hair. It’s a part of me that I’m not always in touch with- but after driving up the 101 with the windows down, singing Sufjan Stevens and getting to the ocean- that small town windblown haired girl comes back to me.

We hosted our LA tour stop this past weekend and will be hosting our San Francisco event this upcoming weekend. In the midst of emails, event planning, driving, playing in the sand and roasting marshmallows over a fire, there’s a lot to think about while out here on the road.

For me, I’ve had to prioritize my morning routine to keep myself thinking clearly and rationally in the midst of so much going on. I’m a big fan of mindfulness, meditation and journaling, which are all involved in my morning routine. Studies have shown that mindfulness practices reduce anxiety and increase concentration, patience and alertness. All things you need while living on the road!

Because our San Francisco tour stop this weekend explores the theme “Taking Ownership of your Wellness” I wanted to make sure this was something I was taking ownership of and making a priority in my own life- especially in times where routines and regular schedules are thrown out the window.

Here are a few things that I’ve found to be super helpful for me to while learning how to incorporate wellness practices into my routine. I hope they help you keep a peaceful and calm mind when you’re on the road traveling

  1. Download a good Meditation App

Meditating in the wilderness while on the road has been such a beautiful, rewarding experience for me while we’re on tour. Meditation apps make it super easy to do anywhere at any time. If you know you’re going to be in a place with little to no service, make sure you download your meditations ahead of time so you don’t miss out on an opportunity to meditate in nature! I put on a pair of headphones, grab a blanket to sit on and head out in the morning somewhere remote.

2. Journal your experiences

It’s amazing how easy it is to forget what you did the day before, or even taking time to connect with how you’re feeling after seeing, tasting and experiencing so many different things. Journaling allows you to stay connected to your emotions and experiences, and do a little check in with yourself on how you’re feeling. Sometimes we don’t even know how anxious we are until we start writing it down. Journaling allows you to stay in tune with your body and what’s happening within and around you.

  1. Stick to your Routine

Routines are difficult on the road- but I’ve found that just having the knowledge that I’m getting up and doing “me time” at the same time everyday has been really helpful to my wellness practice. It allows you to plan around it, and prioritize the time you have to yourself. So whether it’s at night or in the morning or the middle of the day, keep it consistent and set an alarm on your phone reminding you to practice your wellness.

  1. Get outside

Taking advantage of the beautiful landscapes we’re camping in has been incredible. Meditating on the sand dunes, in the desert and on the beach have been a few highlights for me so far. Getting out into nature, especially when we do it intentionally and by ourselves, releases anxiety and allows us to truly connect with our surroundings while on the road.

My hope is that these tips help you practice your wellness and prioritize your emotional health while on the road! Remember, if you’re not connecting to yourself, it’s really difficult to connect with much else on a deeper level. So taking that time to invest in yourself and your wellness will make all of your trip that much richer. Bringing this habit into my life and keeping it during our tour been so rewarding for me personally, I hope you find it to be the same!
