Airstream and the Kodak Caravan

52 years ago, Eastman Kodak documented their plans for the Kodak Pavilion in New York City.

The year was 1963. World’s Fair crowds gathered under the tower, where giant prints were on display for all to see, visible from all around. But where did those photographs come from?

Many who read this may have never used a camera with film. Today, photographers work with digital tools. An alternative is the seductive use of a smartphone.

Kodak believed photography could influence modern life and document the flavor of life’s experiences. So they made plans to travel across the United States on a photography tour prior to the World’s Fair, taking amazing pictures for display on the Pavilion.

For the Kodak Caravan, they chose to travel in an Airstream.

The theme for the Pavilion was “Americana.”

To accomplish their mission, they enlisted three teams of photographers. Their work would be shown in the form of 30 x 60 foot murals in their Tower of Photography exhibit during the World’s Fair of 1964.

In the 21st century, Airstream is referred to as “that iconic trailer,” a legendary travel trailer designed and originally manufactured by Wallace M. Byam.

Eastman Kodak, NASA, Hollywood movies, television programs, movie stars, musicians, and so on have made Airstream a cherished product, a beloved cultural icon.

As designs have changed, purchasing demographics have, too, yet the name Airstream has remained the hallmark of the RV industry for its rich history and outstanding reputation.

Technology has been kind to Airstream with so many advancements in materials, components, and amenities. Eastman Kodak has adjusted in a different way, no longer the historic photography company it once was but today focusing on technology products for digital photographers.

Airstream thrived with the evolutionary – and revolutionary – technology changes, and incorporates ever-changing improvements (not changes) to their travel trailers.

This is the wonderful world of Airstream, giving their customers the best the road has to offer.

Dale “Pee Wee” Schwamborn has silver in his blood. Each week, Pee Wee shares one of his many stories, including his experiences on the iconic Airstream Caravans, his time spent working in the Airstream factory, and the many Airstreamers he’s befriended, far and wide.
