A-List: Treehouse Chocolate

Is there any better way to end a chilly day of exploration than to cozy into your Airstream with an indulgent treat, like a steaming cup of drinking chocolate? Thanks to Treehouse Chocolate, the art of packaged hot chocolate has been elevated to new heights and new flavors.

Founder Aaron Koch drew inspiration for Portland-based Treehouse Chocolate from his experience living in a treehouse in Hawaii and working as a cacao farmer. He explains, “Since chocolate bars melt, I developed a single-serving drinking chocolate that can be made using just hot water… it’s darn good stuff!”

Take one sip of the Original Drinking Chocolate, and that will likely be your first thought – it’s darn good.

Forget about the thin, watery alternatives for getting your drinking chocolate fix. Crafted with organic cacao sourced from a farmer-owned cooperative in Northern Peru, this drinking chocolate has a full-mouth flavor profile. It’s dark, rich and silky smooth. Try it in the Treehouse Chocolate mug to round out your chocolate experience. With packs of six single-serving packets, you may just want to treat yourself to a second cup.

Other flavor offerings include Coconut, Mocha, Sea Salt (laced with San Francisco Salt Company Smoked Cherrywood Sea Salt) and Spiced (spiked with cinnamon, sea salt, and Peruvian red pepper).

Koch had always known he wanted to “create something to share with the world based on the experiences and values” he garnered while living in the treetops. He learned an important lesson that transcends the deliciousness of chocolate. The cacao tree is actually a crop that can save the rainforest. How? For cacao trees to thrive, they need the protection of taller plants, and the easiest way for most farmers to provide this is to leave the natural rainforest intact.

“The idea of chocolate as the key to preserving the jungle electrified me from head to toe. Here my journey began, learning how to steward these incredible trees as a cacao farmer, and to later take this crop to market as a chocolate maker,” says Koch.
